What We Do

In no part of life are we called to go it alone. In Exodus 18, Jethro counsels Moses to delegate some of his work so as not to become overwhelmed by his responsibilities. Jesus sent out His disciples, two by two, knowing that the power of support and partnership was a more effective way to do the work of the Gospel.

In Simple Church, Thom Rainer and Eric Geiger call this the "travel agent versus tour guide" concept. This is the art of participating in the journey and helping along the way, rather than simply giving travelers the itinerary.

Working with church leaders on issues of culture, organization and strategy should employ the same concepts. Handing off a book of "how to's", no matter how customized and tailored, is not enough. Instead, such work should be thought of as a ministry in which experts walk along side church leaders and staff to understand the concepts, implement the recommendations and provide support along the way. Ergon Strategies is committed to doing just that – because success is a journey, not a destination.

01: Cultural Assessment

We lead unique and tailored practical team exercises and one-on-one sessions to get at the core of the organization’s culture and develop sensible solutions to reverse any areas of concern. The result is a more positive, productive and healthy culture where there is a high degree of trust within the team, constructive conflict and a commitment to accountability around quantifiable and achievable results.

02: Organizational Alignment

We will assess organizational goals, review staff skills and proficiencies, and seek to understand the callings of each staff member. From that process, Ergon Strategies can make recommendations on staff realignments, new training and redefining of roles and functions. In addition, we will provide support to the pastoral and lay leadership to make organizational changes in ways that are consistent with God’s grace and honor His call to ministry and service on staff. Ultimately, the result is a happier, healthier organization with staff skill sets and organizational needs in better sync.

03: Strategic Clarity

By asking three basic questions, Ergon Strategies works to test and clarify and/or completely redesign strategies for fulfilling the core mission of reaching our communities and the world for Christ. Those questions are:

  1. What do we do?
  2. Why do we do it?
  3. How do we (can we) do it better than the rest?

Armed with these answers, strategies and tactics will easily flow. A clear, cohesive strategy helps better steward resources, keeps everyone moving in the same direction and creates a focus that better ensures success.

04: Program Support

No church or faith-based organization ever has enough staff and volunteers to do all that they are called to do. To remedy that, Ergon Strategies provides short-term resource support to research, benchmark and develop new programs or initiatives for implementation by staff. This project-centric work may span a few days or many months – all in an effort to continue to move the organization in the direction in which it is led.

05: Coaching

It has often been said that being a church pastor or a faith-based leader is the loneliest job in the world. Given the gravity of the call and the sensitivity of the work, there are few people whom a pastor can turn to for advice or counsel. Communication with our God is always the best, and most available, resource. However, we are also called to be accountable to one another.

Ergon Strategies provides in-person, phone and email coaching and counseling to provide insights on staff management, strategic focus, organizational and cultural consistency and ways to more effectively deal with struggling or ultra-successful ministries.
